Our sense of community and the open space on our doorsteps are more important to us now than ever. Creating a strong sense of place is key to our wellbeing, and public open space, community links and local walks and cycleways are all important considerations in the design of new developments.
For Cala, our approach is to create more than just a collection of homes; it’s about designing vibrant new communities that form an integral part of the local areas in which we build. It is also about understanding how people live and ensuring that careful thought has been given to all aspects of a modern and sustainable lifestyle, including local amenities, employment and access to public transport and road networks.
Of course, a commitment to placemaking does not mean a ‘one size fits all’ solution. Every development is unique, and each development setting requires a bespoke approach.
At Kings Barton, we are bringing to life a long-held vision to create an aspirational new suburb of Winchester, creating 2,000 homes around a vibrant centre of shops, leisure and community facilities, a new school and 30 hectares of public open space.
Transport links are key; Kings Barton will feature a new Park and Ride (Light) for up to 200 cars and there will also be a new bus route between the site, the train station and the city centre.
30% of land at Kings Barton will be dedicated to public open space. Each area will vary in character dependent on its location and will include a central square, a village green, equipped play areas and sports pitches with changing rooms. There will also be 2km of footpaths and cycle ways across the site, linking residential areas to the public open space, the Neighbourhood Centre, neighbouring communities and the city centre.
Kings Barton takes inspiration from the unique character of Winchester and embraces the very best of traditional and contemporary design. It will form a new northern edge and impressive new gateway to the city.
A comprehensive Design Code for Kings Barton serves as a quality benchmark and provides a clear framework and guiding principles for all development. The Design Code was created following extensive consultation and workshops with Winchester City Council, local stakeholder groups and the local community.
At Kings Barton, our vision is to create a unique sense of place and a new community where people will be proud to live, for many generations to come.
