Born from the Danish ‘Hygge’ trend, the concept of ‘Slow Living’ is leading a lifestyle that’s conscious, mindful and meaningful.

According to Google Trends data, searches for slow living increased by 111% since June 2022.*  And as the world seemingly keeps moving at a faster pace, the Slow Living movement advocates a shift toward a relaxed lifestyle whilst cultivating self-awareness.

Slow living interiors are all about creating a tranquil look that’s sustainable and built to last, whilst using a thoughtful approach.

For our latest blog, we wanted to share our top tips and tricks on how to introduce the concept into your own home, with advice from one of our trusted interior designers at Envision Showhomes.

Eileen Kesson, who has encapsulated the trend in our Lewis showhome at Mains of Grandhome in Aberdeen, said: “This therapeutic movement emphasises a desire to introduce some slowness into everyday life, as well as creating a space that brings serenity to the entire family.

“Pared back and simple, slow living looks afresh at our living spaces to see how they can synch better with how families live.”

Cala’s top tips for recreating the slow living trend

Hygge your home

Hygge is a Danish and Norwegian term that describes a mood of cosiness and "comfortable conviviality" with feelings of wellness and contentment. An easy way to connect to this mood is by introducing snug rugs, plants that connect you to the outdoors, warm blankets and earthy-coloured accessories.

Try tranquil tones

Timeless tones with longevity are perfect for the slow living trend. Neutral hues work in every space, while shades inspired by nature – such as blues and greens – will help to create a relaxing retreat. Durability should also be considered when it comes to decorating, and a sparing approach – using less clutter and embracing a minimalistic lifestyle – is recommended.

Use considered materials

The use of natural materials such as wood and rattan help promote sustainability and wellbeing. These thoughtful materials that are minimalistic and practical will bring an element of authenticity to the home. Try some rattan dining chairs or lampshades for a simple update.

Lighten up

Lighting is essential to creating a relaxing and welcoming space, and it can make any room look brighter and more spacious. Introduce natural daylight where possible and consider lighting options with an ambiance that boosts your mood and makes you feel more awake throughout the day.

Embrace flexible living

The kitchen is often known as the heart of the home, providing a space to bring families together and welcome guests. Open plan kitchens are ideal for those looking to embrace the slow living lifestyle, and should be a relaxing space that’s clean, comfortable and decluttered.

Our homes are so important when it comes to wellbeing, as the way they are designed and set up can help us create a space that’s personal and attuned to our needs.

Steve Rule, Cala’s Group Design and Technical Director said: “Our Light & Space Collection homes are designed not only to allow family members to co-exist, but to really thrive together and enjoy the space they live in, whether they are working, relaxing, or enjoying time together.”
