According to the Home Builders Federation, for every £1 spent on housing, £3 is put back into the ecomony. With an economic output for £19.2 billion each year, alongside a further £1.4 billion through tax, housebuilding is a massive contributor to the UK economy.
The housebuilding industry is also a major employer, supporting 600,000 jobs both directly and via the supply chain. £5.5 billion is spent on suppliers annually and 90% of this stays in the UK. By building more sustainably, housebuilders can create a stronger future both for their business and the jobs they support.
The industry provides more than just homes. Private sector housing also invests in local facilities including schools, health centres, sporting grounds and infrastructure within each community, aiding more than just housing needs throughout the UK. These provisions are agreed through the planning process, and amount to around £576 million each year. Green space, playparks and open land are also created and utilised in our developments and surrounding areas. Cala's Community Pledge goes beyond planning requirements to bring additional benefit and value to the areas we build in.
Over 90 employees across the Cala businesses are actively involved in helping to achieve our sustainability objectives as part of their roles, while full-time sustainability technicians have been appointed to explore innovations, implement trials, and measure results.
Green Teams have been established in each of our offices to brainstorm, research and implement initiatives which will help bring about positive change at a local-level – from energy saving and recycling measures within our offices, to employee wellbeing and meaningful community support initiatives.
We’re also working with utility providers to inform discussions around the decarbonisation of the grid. We have put in place pioneering measures such as utilities calculators and monitoring stations on some of our developments, to provide data which supports our net zero carbon commitment and ties in with wider infrastructure.
