Farncombe Day Centre aims to improve the quality of life for older people in Farncombe and Godalming by encouraging social inclusion, facilitating and promoting better health and enabling older people to be independent and enjoy their life at home for as long as possible. To achieve this, the Centre provides a range of services including daily activities to encourage socialisation, mental and physical wellbeing.
Cala Homes, which is building its Amlets Place development in Cranleigh, launched the Cala Community Bursary in Surrey in February 2019 and invited organisations, charities and groups in the area to apply for a share of £13,000 to help fund projects that make a difference in the community. Farncombe Day Centre was chosen as a recipient of the bursary, with funds going towards new dining room furniture, so the charity can continue to serve a two-course hot lunch to the 25 to 30 older people who attend every weekday.
This year, the Community Bursary scheme has awarded a total of £109,000 to 117 good causes across the UK. A further 200 causes have previously benefited from the scheme, with over £200,000 awarded to various initiatives since 2017.
Annette Clarke, Centre Manager at Farncombe Day Centre, said: “We are thrilled to have received this funding as part of Cala’s 2019 community bursary. Many of Farncombe Day Centre’s users have higher needs including mobility issues, memory and learning difficulties or mental health issues. The Centre plays an incredibly important role in their lives by offering warm meals, activities and entertainment and assisted bathing for those unable to do so at home, meaning that they can maintain their independence for as long as possible.
“The new dining room furniture will make a huge difference for our charity as we look to further develop our services for older people in the local area, ensuring that we have the resources required to accommodate more users in the near future.”
Nicki Dennis, Sales and Marketing Director at Cala Homes (South Home Counties), said: “Cala has always been committed to making a positive and lasting contribution to the local communities in which it builds and the Community Bursary scheme has given us the opportunity to find out exactly what support is required locally. We are delighted to provide vital funding to support Farncombe Day Centre and the hard work it does to support the elderly in both Farncombe and Godalming.”
