Here at Cala, we’re all about the celebrations and getting to know those who live around you. The Jubilee offers the perfect opportunity to meet your neighbours if you’ve just recently moved in or get to know them better if you’ve not had the chance over the last couple of years due to the pandemic.
If you’re still in the midst of planning or you haven’t even started yet - it’s not too late! We’ve put together our last-minute top tips to help you plan the ultimate Platinum Jubilee street party. And whether you’re celebrating the Jubilee or not, street parties are always a good idea, so use this guide for your other summer parties!
Getting to know your neighbours
Buying a new Cala home means becoming part of a new and inclusive community. With new build homes, the advantage is that everyone is new to the neighbourhood so throwing a street party is the perfect way to make introductions and get to know the families you are living next to.
Placemaking is important at Cala, helping us create thriving communities for families to grow in. The homes we build today not only shape the look of our towns, cities and villages but also the way we live our lives and the community spirit we foster.
A street party is the perfect proposition to celebrate the Jubilee whilst enjoying classic British food and drinks, as well as quality time with your neighbours… now where’s that bunting!
Posting invites through doors or placing posters throughout your street is a simple way to invite all neighbours, ensuring no one gets left out and everyone puts the date in their diary. It can be as formal or informal as you like – its all about forging new friendships and making your community ethos stronger.
What to serve at a Jubilee party
Catering for a street party can seem daunting but it depends on your numbers and how many people are attending. The best way to organise this is for every home to bring a speciality dish or something different to ensure you don’t end up with the same items.
If everyone brings something for their own household, it also ensures that everyone’s needs are catered for whether that might be vegan or an intolerance for example.
Our top recommendations include The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee official pudding - a lemon and swiss roll amaretti trifle inspired by the lemon posset served at Her Majesty’s wedding. Get your apron on to make this delicious pudding - you’ll find the recipe here.
It wouldn’t be a street party without homemade sandwiches (Coronation chicken would be our royal go-to) and don’t forget a Victoria sponge. It’s a classic and yet another of the Queen’s favourite. Or why not throw your very own afternoon tea?
How to decorate a Jubilee street party
You can go as big or small as you want, however you’ll find lots of Jubilee-inspired decorations including bunting and balloons online. Or to bring the community together before the weekend, get local children involved in making their own decorations for the street party, it’s a great opportunity for the little ones to forge some friendships too.
The most popular décor for street parties is bunting displayed from different homes criss-crossed over the street and of course there will be plenty of flags displayed across the country that weekend.
How to find events in your local community
The official Big Jubilee Lunch is taking place on Sunday 5 June encouraging neighbours to join in the celebrations together and get to know each other. This could be something as simple as having a cup of tea with a neighbour or a full-on street party where everyone is invited.
If you are taking part in the Big Jubilee Lunch then we recommend downloading the brilliant free pack full of lots of ideas and inspiration.
You can also register your own street event on The Queen’s official Platinum Jubilee website, which includes an interactive map where you can also find local events held throughout the bank holiday weekend.
We’re hoping the sun will be shining all weekend to let you enjoy a well-deserved weekend of celebrations. Make sure you share any Cala street parties with us on social @calahomes.
